This pattern is named after the Palace of Versailles, built in 1684. Large diagonal squares known as 'Parquet de Versailles' were introduced to replace the marble flooring that required constant washing, which tended to rot the joists beneath the floors. Although originally used by the French wealthy, this pattern has become more accessible overtime and has become popular in Melbourne’s residential homes – particularly in the French Provincial style.
